Catastrophe Is Anything But
The premise of ‘American tourist knocks up UK woman and then endures a cultural sea-change in order to make it work’ sounds like a shit idea for a show, truly. But only because we’re faced with the memory of so many tired and wanky cliches that you can almost see how this Channel 4 series might play out on screen.
Lucky then that this UK series is co-written and co-starring Irish gem Sharon Horgan and US comedian Rob Delaney who single-handedly transform this concept into one of the most utterly watchable and truly, TRULY lovable television shows of the year.
The two have magical chemistry on screen and navigate the minefield of pregnancy in a new relationship with such good humour and killer acting that the fact that there are only six episodes per season will leave you a little heartbroken . Sharon Horgan won us over several years ago alongside David Cross in another culture clash comedy (The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret) but Delaney (who’s wikipedia bio basically surmises that he’s a ‘Twitter Comedian’) is the most exciting revaluation of the year. Equal parts handsome and stoic he is the ‘ying’ to Horgan’s batshit crazy, and damned if he’s not going to become television’s newest ‘hearthrob’ after this role.
Catastrophe is currently airing on ABC’s iView. Three episodes are available to stream now.
